I have my shopping cart ready to go with a 5.56 midlength 11.5″ barrel. I’m ready to hit “Confirm” when I decide to Google this barrel setup some more. I manage to find some message board posts that have a variety of opinions about this type of barrel.
Lots of ppl decry it as “worse than a rifle length gas 16 inch,” and state that the short distance from the distally displaced gas port to the crown is an invitation for reliability issues. Some others say that it is intended for suppressor use only, or with an adjustable gas block at the very least. Lastly, some are saying that it runs like a champ unsuppressed and eats every kind of ammo that comes its way.
My intention is to build an AR pistol in 556. I have a 16″ AR, so i’d like this build to be as short as possible so I don’t have something so similar to my 16″. I was planning on assembling a 10.5″ build, but I read that an 11.5″ makes a significant difference in terms of dwell time and recoil, hence the initial move towards 11.5.
Is 11.5 midlength The Answer? Or is 11.5 carbine the Tried and True? Or should I go down 10.5?
