6.5cm vs .308
Posted by Logan on November 13, 2021 at 11:21 amI have an ar10 lower sitting in my safe but cant decide if I want a 6.5 or .308 upper. Previously I had a ruger precision rifle in 6.5 and I still have about 20 rounds of it left. 6.5 is more expensive but has better ballistics while .308 is cheaper and more available.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 am6.5 costs 2-3 times more than 308 right now.
Barrel life on 308 is approximately double that of 6.5.I went with 308 when i was in you place a few months ago.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amAn ar10 is a very heavy hunting rifle. You can get an equally accurate bolt gun at the half the weight.
If you’re precision shooting, get the 6.5. If you want a shorter barreled battle rifle, get .308.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amDepends on the distance. Within about 400-500 yards, .308 is perfectly adequate. Beyond that, 6.5 is going to be slightly better.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amIt is likely easier to find .308 ammo over 6.5 as well.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amQuality 308 ammo us not cheaper than quality 6.5 ammo. They are within pennies of the same price. The only 308 ammo that is cheaper than 6.5 is the cheapo m80 ball type ammo. That is not comparable to quality 6.5 ammo.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amYou’ve pretty well summed it up.
Tactically, 308 is going to do fine against all but the best body armors, hunting is a round of choice and the right AR-10 can get out to about 1500 yards fairly reliably. Its more available and cheaper than 6.5.
6.5 has better ballistics and is going to perform a lot better at very long ranges. Otherwise, the 308 is preferable from my vantage.
I personally prefer the 308, but you certainly could make a case for 6.5

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 amGiven your answers to other questions here, it doesn’t sound like the 6.5 is giving you any increase in the things you are looking for.
The .308 is cheaper, more flexible, and with more than enough capability for the ranges you’re dealing with.

GuestNovember 13, 2021 at 11:21 am308 is far easier to get shooting correctly out of a semi auto rifle. I build absolutely identical rifles one in 6.5 and one in 308 and the 6.5 took FOREVER to get to run reliably
