I’m in the market for a range/home defence shotgun.

My local Scheels has two contenders. (Mn)

    Mossberg 500 ATI Tactical 12 Gauge $630
Winchester SXP Extreme Defender FDE 12 Gauge Shotgun $480

    If I had my druthers I’d purchase a 500 or 870.

If I was not a poor it would be a mag fed, semi, or bullpup. Maybe a Benelli 12g chambered in a 3 & 2 3/4

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance

Have you taken a lesson at your local shotgun facility yet? Experience before equipment. Your preferences may change quickly after you get some range time.

I have so many used shotguns, one of my favorite is a Mossberg 500 I got for $150 plus FFL Fee and tax about 5 years ago, I’ve bought many for about $200 since especially in the last two years. Look for old savages, or J Steven’s that are about 30 plus years old, they run about $200 to $250

A Maverick 88 is $200 if you’re on that McDonalds budget grind. But, between those two guns you listed, the Mossberg is the better buy.

Also mag feds are super neat. I own one and love shooting it, but rimmed cartridges do not reliably feed well in magazines. It’s still pretty good, like I probably get a malfunction once every 80 shells or so, but I don’t have reliability problems with tube fed semis. A mag fed bullpup is just…. horrible. They’re all extremely low quality and all made in Turkey. Absolutely avoid.
