On the one hand, “conserving” anything in Europe will never lead you to gun rights, because Europeans almost universally never had them. American conservatism is relatively unique in that regard.

On the other, we’ve been betrayed by (R) politicians a *lot*, and they always get away with it because gun rights voters are a captive bloc.

The labels don’t really mean much. The progressive element of the left has gone FAR left and they’ve succeeded at pulling the Overton window with them. Positions that were liberal 10 years ago are conservative now. Positions that were conservative 10 years ago are considered far-right. So now it’s perfectly conceivable that someone could be calling themselves “conservative” while supporting gun control.

In the US the democrats pretty consistently vote for more gun control because they’ve been succeeding with the incremental approach. They are rarely penalized at the ballot box for it so they get effectively infinite attempts. Republicans don’t really care but it serves their political interests to appear pro-gun in certain circumstances so sometimes they’ll prevent the democrats from succeeding but it is rare that they actually support anything that moves the line back in the pro-gun direction save for state CCW laws.

How do we come up with a solution to these infringements on both sides?

I see your point, but I don’t think these countries have a 2A type constitution

I am not saying the GOP won’t screw us, but conservative in America is different than conservative in the Commonwealth.

I think it’s important to remember that once someone dedicates their life to attaining power… they become more willing to do anything to protect it.

So no matter the political party… there will always be those within that plan to maintain their authority by disarming the populace… it just so happens that in the usa the vast majority of voters that support gun control have aligned themselves with the political left… and the opposition being the right wing voters that like guns more and therefore the right wing politicians pander to the pro gun folks…

But a the word politician is synonymous with liar…

I think you’re conflating “conservative” with “Republican”. Conservatives actually have values, and individual liberty is a central belief. Republicans on the other hand support whatever is politically convenient, and have no vision for the country other than to stall the Democrats while collecting our tax dollars.

American conservatives are not European conservatives.

It doesn’t matter which “team” you vote for eventually they will come for our guns. It’s inevitable. So all we can do is try and postpone it, and decide what we are willing to do about it when it finally happens.

Keep in mind that our entire political spectrum sits farther to the right than UK.

Again, why I’m an independent and vote on a case by case basis. Yes, that tilts toward one party currently. There’s no reason to extrapolate that fact into a belief that there are teams here and either is “on your side”. They all are on their own sides and occasionally our interests align.

Shoot it was Ronald Reagan and that started most of the major gun control when he was governor of California.
