If so, what do you hunt and what kind of buckshot do you use?
IndecisivenooneGuestMay 14, 2022 at 1:12 pm
Work great on coyotes close range
hoplophilepapistGuestMay 14, 2022 at 1:12 pm
I’ve taken a few microwaves and tv sets with it.
freon_trotskyGuestMay 14, 2022 at 1:12 pm
Yep. Shot several deer. Would not recommend for bears.
It is excellent for use up-close. Impressive bang-flops inside 15 yards.
The best cheap load I used was Winchester #1 buck. The best stuff, if you can find them, are Hornaday Superformance or other 00 loads using the Flite Control wad.

Its Illegal to use on big game where I live so no
sawmane1GuestMay 14, 2022 at 1:12 pm
Yep, 00. Taken two bucks with it here in Western Oregon where most shots are taken under 20 yards in the timber/brush.

Use it for deer. I hunt heavy cover in the woods. I keep my shots 40-50 yards max. At 40 yards 00buck, most pellets land in a pie plate area. I use the same ammo and same gun because that’s what I’ve patterned. Pellets have great penetration at that range. Many end up in lodged in the fur on the opposite side. Deer either fold, or go 50 yards. Always lungs/heart.
I don’t use slugs because I’ve got an older fixed full choke, and I’m worried about ruining it. That, and it’s heavy cover. Sometimes I’m shooting through a bit of brush. I also have never had a problem as long as I keep the range limited.
I know all the cases against buckshot, and that’s fair, but I’ve been using it a long time. I have more confidence with buckshot at 40 yards than I would any other firearm in my scenario.

Hunted at an area that was buck only, federal 00 flite control did the trick.

Whitetail when we’re doing drives. Dropped a buck right in it’s tracks with 2.75″ 00 this past season. Didn’t tear up much meat at all either.

In Michigan, when deer hunters were restricted to shotgun in a tree stand, I used to load 00 buckshot shells behind a slug. I go slug > 00 > 00. Idea is that if I miss with the slug, the deer would be moving and I could evaluate whether I should take another shot.
I got my first buck this way. My first shot (slug) was an obvious miss low at about 40 yards. Chambered a 00 buckshot (pump action) as it began to run away in a radius around my tree I got another shot at the vitals and got it. One of the shot in the load hit the stomach too, which was disgusting, but worth it for my first buck and an 8 pointer.

Grew up hunting in shot only counties. Pattern your gun until you find the best combo for range, pellet size, and grouping.(Following are my shells for tidewater Virginia Whitetails)
Federal premium 4B for long shots (35+) in a field
Winchester XX 1B for light brush or stalking
Federal 00 for hunting the heavy stuff
Federal 000 for the swamp deer

Nope, illegal in Rhode Island to hunt deer with a cartridge firing more than one projectile. The largest legal shot for any hunting is no. 2.

I never knew so many places did not allow it. Where I live does and I use it, never taken anything with it but growing up I knew a lot of guys who did, especially on driven hunts. As said above to me the key is the same as any gun. Know your point of aim! Practice practice practice. I hear a lot of people say you don’t need to aim with buckshot… not true get out and pattern your gun at all ranges you might be shooting.
lambopeeneeGuestMay 14, 2022 at 1:12 pm
It’s unfortunately illegal where I live

Have killed dozens of bucks through the years in the fl swamps with 3 inch 00 buck.
