All these guys volunteered for infantry, and volunteered for service overseas. Sadly, there weren’t enough volunteers to replace losses or rotate units out for rest and leave.
As a result, the First Canadian Army was engaged in near-continuous combat operations from D-Day through to the end of the Battle of the Scheldt on November 8, after which they were finally pulled off the line for three months’ rest.
Between June 6 and November 8, the Canadian Army liberated Caen, destroying the 12th SS Panzer Division ‘Hitlerjugend’ in the process; helped close the Falaise pocket; freed the channel ports; and cleared the heavily-fortified Scheldt estuary, which allowed the Allies to finally use the port facilities of Antwerp.

GuestJune 24, 2022 at 3:54 amDoes anyone know more about the use of bicycles? Were they effective? I was thinking why not just bring motorcycles but they might of had issues getting them on land without damaging them without the harbours being set up yet and probably issues with gas supply.
