    They put up a nice fight make decent table fare.

    It is a warmouth. It has the lines radiating from the eye and the purple( can also be red) on the dot on the gill flap

    Everyone is saying rock bass, but in my experience rock bass have more of a dotted line pattern across their body, not really like what we see here. Warmouth seems closer in my opinion.

    You might share where you are located, as rock bass and warmouth have different native areas as well.

    According to these two sources, it’s most likely a war mouth, as they indicate there’s no known current population(s) of rock bass in CA, not just the delta.

    My grandpa and I used to eat these all the time back when we’d fish together. Scale it, gut it, cut the head off and then bread and fry like a panfish. Certainly not the best tasting fish but they’re decent.

    Not real sure you would want to eat a warmouth man. They were created to eat trash.

    Small mouth. There’s no rock bass in the delta, it’s freshwater.
