Oh boy do I have a story for you…. so bit of background about myself, I am a 33 year old (now) chemist working in univeristy R&D (for half my job the other half being teaching). I am fulltime staff and we have no policy on how we have to look….. I have a beard and long blond hair down to my knee’s… everytime I go through an airport I get “randomly checked” because I look like a hippy…. one time in Frankfort airport in Germany I got pulled and I did infact test postive for nitrates… told them I am a chemist and then how there test worked and why I was testing postive (found out later this might be the worst thing to do) my bag got searched and one of my other hobbies is coin collecting and I had bought a set of old Germany 10 mark gold coins…. they find the coins…. they find chemistry magizines that I had brought with me…. look sus they thing I been paided in gold to do some dodgy job… went into a little room they for a chat with the Gemran border police. They ended up being super nice but was there for over an hour and just made my flight….

Try going from the demolition range at work to the airport for vacation. Testing positive for C4 explosives at an airport is a wild ride.

It hasn’t happened yet, but if a luggage store ever pisses me off, I’m going back and sprinkling fertilizer dust on all their inventory.

Always just put it in my checked luggage. It’s going to get extra searched anyway with ammo. Probelm solved.

Flying out of the Southeast US, they don’t give a shit. I’ve never had any issues. I was flying from out west after a hunt and they chose me for a hand swab. They said, “have you come in contact with gunpowder or explosives in the last 24 hours.” I said yes and the TSA agent was speechless… “oh… I don’t know what to do.” He called his manager over. The manager said, “Ok, so he is going to test positive so why bother? Let him go.”

I got pulled out of line once because I had silicone on my pants. We were headed home from California after flying down to do some emergency work in a 20 hour 1 day turn. This was like March 2002…
