Bowfin (Amia calva) are native to much of the Mississippi drainage and most gulf and Atlantic coastal drainages. They’re the only surviving member of a group of fishes that was successful in the Mesozoic, and have retained most of their morphological characters. That means dinosaurs could have been fishing for an extremely similar ancestor to modern bowfin – if you don’t think that’s cool, then gtfo.

It’s a choupique (shoe pick) in cajun country. They eat anything and fight pretty hard. They also produce edible caviar.

After a friend and I had a run in with one, we looked it up and saw people referring to them as Fresh Water Sharks. Not sure if that’s because of their teeth, jaws, and propensity to eat anything, or because they’re ancient and haven’t had to evolve much like sharks. Either way, it’s an appropriate nickname.

Great fun to catch. We used to have a sit where we could get them in abundance from the bank. Great fun for an hour after work.

When I was a kid my friend and I were catching these in a creek in Missouri and didn’t have a clue what they were. Our friend said it’s called a dog fish. He said you can do two things with it.

    1. Put butter on a brick, place the fish on the brick and let it sit in the sun for several days. Then throw away the fish and eat the brick.

    2. Nail it to a tree 100 feet from your house to keep the flies away.
