So I am looking at getting a fish finder for my SS107. I know this can be a very much Chevy Vs Ford thing but if you leave brands out of it, What features are a must have for Kayak fishing. Is it Side scan, down scan? What type of mapping do you use? ?s it just the make my own maps or is it a chip? What do you use most and what do you not use even though you thought you would? I am not really concerned about size at this point either cause I know the biggest you can get in your budget is best.

For me it’s having both the side scan and down imaging to pick out structure. I heavily prefer to be standing and casting 90% of the time so not covering much water in between spots. Actively finding fish on sonar isn’t happening as much as moving around and finding spots to pick apart then move again.

I have a Garmin Striker Plus 4 and I’m about to upgrade to the Striker Plus 5 CV. I really like that I can make my own maps as I paddle, so I know it’s always accurate. With that said, I barely ever remember to look at them and end up using my eyes for figuring out where to fish. I should use it more. One of my favorite things about having a fish finder is being able to video game fish with a drop shot straight beneath the kayak in deep water. It’s a lot of fun fishing vertically like that and watching your bait dance around fish on the screen. I’m really excited to try out the down imaging in my next unit.

It’s a game changer having even the most basic fish finder. You’ll know exactly how deep the water is, you can track temperature changes, and you can find weed lines and structure you never knew existed. There are all kinds of different features as you know, but every single one of them will help you catch more fish.

I put a Lowrance Hook Reveal 5 SS on my kayak and really like it. The built in maps are good but the Genesis live mapping feature is awesome. The down imaging works great with lots of detail.

Take a look at this unit you won’t be disappointed!
