GuestJune 23, 2022 at 1:19 amHave had terrible luck with my Humminbird Helix 7. Died again this month… probably the transponder again. Might want to avoid that one.

GuestJune 23, 2022 at 1:19 amGo with a 5″ display you wont regret it. Helix 5 or Hook Reveal imo. You’ll need to decide for yourself if a model with sidescan is worth it.

GuestJune 23, 2022 at 1:19 amIf you’re considering buying maps, find the one with best map coverage. It took some digging, but I was able to come up with a 95% idea of which ones did and did not have good maps for the lakes i was most likely to fish. I ended up going with a garmin because of the cmor maps and I went with the 73sv because i caught a pretty good deal on the ‘last years model’ from basspro last year.

GuestJune 23, 2022 at 1:19 amI started with a Striker 4 and upgraded to a Helix 7si last year. I fish some larger reservoirs and take occasional trips out to the Chesapeake Bay. The Striker’s 2d sonar was good. The complete lack of a basemap sucks, even after you’ve been all over and it’s plotted out most of the bottom contours. Custom color schemes for depth are good once you dink around and get them set up.
The Helix is a huge upgrade in all respects, except that it uses a little more power and the one I got doesn’t go below 150 kHz or so. That wide beam is useful for searching for fish but more importantly to me for seeing my jig vs fish depth. I can only pick up my jigs when they are right below me which isn’t the case if I’m drifting with wind or something. The larger screen is fantastic. SI is a mixed bag. I use it a lot to understand underwater features, rarely do I notice fish, and mounting the transducer is a pain unless you’re happy with a sidearm mount or have a boat with a way to retract it somehow.

GuestJune 23, 2022 at 1:19 amCheck [this one](https://www.tekcoplus.com/products/ff-1108-1) out from Tekcoplus. I think they have other models too, so you might wanna check those out as well.
