How do different manufacturers name their firearms?

I know glocks are named after their patent number (I think?), but why did Mossberg name a shotgun the Mossberg 590 and other manufacturers?

GuestMay 19, 2021 at 12:35 pmI’m unfamiliar with any consistent numeric system with Glock. I just figured they were Fucking with us.
Glock 22? Shoots a .40
Glock 44? Shoots a .22
Glock 45? Shoots a 9mm
I believe it is something to do with patent order though.
