How is a sliding/falling breech block locked shut and how is it unlocked without having to manually do anything but pull the lever down?

Some sources say the lever itself i caught on a latch, but I’ve never seen a video where the gunner has to undo a latch before pulling the lever.

The Ruger #1 has the latch built into the lever so unlatching is part of opening the breach.

There’s usually some sort of passive retaining mechanism that keeps the lever from sagging.
The breech is locked by the fact there is is a steel block that slides perpendicular to the bore.
What locks a lever action? I’ve never seen anyone undo a latch?
