  • how to remove handguard? (free float knurled tight)

Posted by alecubudulecu on June 23, 2022 at 9:28 pm

so i did my first AR build. and i got everything on fine… however, i realized the handguard…. i’m not sure how i’ll remove it if i need to do any work on the barrel.

It’s the one pictured (daytona tactical free float handguard). it’s got a knurled barrel nut, and i had to end up using 8 barrel shims to time it … so i’m a bit anxious as it’s not flush with the upper receiver, and i only got about 30-32 foot lbs of torque on the nut…. meanwhile ran out of shims…. so if it’s not tight enough, i’ll have to remove it and add more shims….

Regardless, i had to use a rubber mallet to whack this thing on top of the knurling to get it to go on… which is when i realized.. “wait… so if this has to come off…. what do i do?????”

suggestions? (fyi it’s ok for now… just asking preemptively in case issues arise)

and yes, this is without the screws on the bottom ….

Aren’t those wrench flats on the bottom of the barrel nut in that picture? Most adjustable wrenches have a little indicator on the side to show you what size you adjusted it to, buy a crows foot in that size to install it.

Why did you need to use shims? What are you timing the nut to?

If you used a hammer to install this, how do you know what it’s torqued to?

8 shims sounds excessive. Are the holes in the nut really far apart or something?

Shims on a barrel nut? You fucked up guy. Time to take it all apart and have a smith help you.

You shouldn’t need shims with that type of barrel nut.
