Experience and requirements can **vastly** differ between ranges.

What states will you be visiting? Ease of access varies greatly, and some states have rental ranges catering to tourists with exotic firearms available.

You might be able to find some people here who would be along your path who would be willing to meet you at a public range to try out their guns.

Since you won’t tell is where you are going, I will assume it is Manhattan. You will not be allowed to shoot at all.

If you want accurate advice it will help if you tell us where in this massive country you will be.

Let us know the state for recommendations.
Remember it’s important to wear eye and ear protection. A paid range will probably have this available.
Pay constant attention to the following:

    1. Keeping your trigger finger above the trigger guard and along the side of the firearm.

    2. Keeping the firearm pointed in a safe direction all the time. Keep it pointed at the ground in front of you or down range (toward target). Especially in the moment just after you shoot.

    3. Always treat the firearm as if it’s loaded and dangerous. Even if you know it’s unloaded, others don’t know for sure.

    4. Always know your “backstop”. That’s what’s behind your target. In a designated range this isn’t hard, but in the desert you make sure you’re shooting into a hillside instead of over a highway.

NY sucks on guns. That being said, it is fairly common for ranges to have fun rentals. Bring your passport and a buddy, some ranges don’t allow non-liscenees to shoot alone

PA will have more availability for gun rentals probably. Same advice applies

If you stay in PA, try to find gun ranges that rent pistols. They probably won’t rent rifles or shotguns, but it’s possible.

Upstate NY (outside of NYC) probably will have handgun ranges where you can rent handguns. I could be wrong though as NY state has some weird handgun laws.

Keep in mind, ammo at ranges is marked up. My local range fees are:

    $20 for the range
    $15 for a gun rental
    $2 per target.
$20-30 for ammo (50 rounds). Add more $ for different calibers.

You’re looking at approximately $60 on the lower end of the scale for a pistol rental. My range does allow you to swap pistols if they are the same Caliber for free (ex: Glock 17 for a Beretta 92 fs).

If you ever make it to Las Vegas, you can rent a full automatic AK or M16. That’s super pricey; $70 for 20 rounds at one place I went to.

Good luck, and welcome to the land of bald eagles and lifted trucks!

I had a brief dream of helping a fellow rediter, but that’s like a 2 hour drive. And Jamestown sucks.

Nope, nope, nope…. You need a weekend in Vegas.

Shoot a bunch of different machine guns, blow up cars, drive a tank, shoot from a helicopter, be the star in your own action movie.

Look up gunship helicopters or battlefield vegas or machineguns vegas.

If you’re coming to America, then you have to shoot an AR15. It’s America’s rifle. The finest shooting implement ever made and the most popular firearm in the country. It can shoot groups smaller than 25mm at 100m and has very little recoil. It can also be chambered in almost any modern cartridge.
