  • JHP ammo recommendations?

Posted by Jessica on September 22, 2022 at 9:33 pm

I own a G43x and a CZ P-07. I currently have a few boxes of Sig Sauer V-Crown 124gr ammunition. Federal HST is a bit too expensive for me and i just want something reliable that works. Any recommendations or is sig ammo just fine?

The odds of your ammo choice making a difference in a self defense scenario are infinitesimal. First you need to be threatened and in fear for your life. Then you need to successfully draw. Then you need to fire and hit. Then the hit you make has to be marginal enough that bullet expansion plays a part in whether you succeeded at stopping the threat or not. So something that’s probably never going to happen has to be followed by two things that may not happen and a fourth thing that will also probably not happen.

Bullet performance in self defense scenarios really only becomes significant at institutional levels of frequency.

Are you plinking defensive rounds? I always just start with clearing my carry mag of defensive rounds focusing on accuracy above all else.. then it’s cheap jhp until the last mag again in carry again of hst and again accuracy focused. So like 30 rounds of defensive ammunition. The cost difference is like 5$ for those 30 rounds that I use. Its the 300 rounds of Jhp that hurt.

I use SIG V-Crown 124gr or 147gr depending on the gun myself. It’s got a good consistent expansion and has high reviews. I ran a couple hundred rounds and not one hiccup across multiple guns.

I see no reason to spend $1+ per round on something else when SIG is cheaper and works fine.

Personally, I only run specialty or expanding ammo in specific competitions and hunting, respectively. My go-to for range and carry is 9mm NATO. Spicier than standard ball ammo and feeds uber reliably all the time, which is very important if your life is on the line.

Now, 9mm in general, doesn’t have as *many* issues reliably feeding HP ammo as, say, .45ACP, but you can still get a hang-up …which is a no-go for me.

If you’re intent on using expanding ammo, I’d look at the Pow’rball type design, with a rounded nose and insert that pushes back through the round. Hornady makes some good ones. I’ve had very good results that type of design.

124gr is a good weight for defense, just be sure that you’re training with same weight, similar power factor as your carry ammo. None of us can afford to shoot paper with TAPs or Critical Duty. That’s why I just stick with NATO across the board.

    Hope this helps some.
