Just got my first fish finder

I’ve been watching videos on YouTube trying to learn all I can but I still don’t understand how to understand where exactly the fish are. If I’m paddling with the transducer next to me does that mean I need to turn around to cast in the direction of the fish? What’s the best way to estimate how far from the kayak the fish actually are?
