Thats a hog fish, pretty cool you got it on hook and line. Most guys use a tiny circle hook with shrimp and have to deal with a bunch of bycatch to get one

As a Florida native myself, it’s inconceivable to me that MULTIPLE locals in the Keys didn’t know a hog.

Must have been New York transplants you spoke to.

Florida partnered with fish rules, it’s a pretty cool app.

Hope you land a bigger one. I think that’s the best eating fish (hogfish) Florida has to offer.

Used to live in key west for a year, most people like catching these with harpoon guns. Pretty cool you hooked this guy up.

Hogfish. Great eating and a great fight on light tackle. We fish for them around Tampa Bay Area. Around 40’ with shrimp on a knocker rig. Great catch.

Female hog fish. So the females have a smaller mouth and don’t have that distinct painted white face, as they mature they turn into males(hermaphroditic) develop that painted white face and larger mouth. I’m not from Florida but spearfish a lot but honestly don’t know much about hog fish, please correct me if I’m wrong. I learned all of this because I speared one in Belize one time that was a female and was curious why it’s colors were different than what I had seen in photos from Florida.

Hogfish, sometimes called a hog snapper even though it’s actually a wrasse. Delicious, although this one looks undersized

Fins not right for a hog fish; looks like a John Dory – order Zeiformes.
