  • Need help finding the right nightstand gun.

I recently got my carry permit, my EDC is an XD-S mod 2 .45. For home defense I’d like a bigger gun that has:
    1. .45 ACP
    2. 10 round capacity
    3. A light rail on bottom
    4. Under $700

I was looking at the S&W M&P M2.0 but the .45 version doesn’t have a light rail for some reason. I’ve also looked at the Sig P320, that seems like a viable option, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other reliable guns that aren’t a million dollars.

M&P 45 was my first gun, and I still love it. You can get the 2.0 with the 5.1″ threaded barrel, 10rds, optics ready for 640 on Grabagun. 540 after the mail in rebate. All the full size M&Ps have rails. Also reliable factory extended 14rd magazines, but you’ll want to dremel the giant extension down a bit.

    Do it.

I got me a cop trade in 45 USP to do the same thing for $469 probably ten years ago. I dulled the plastic back down with some steel wool to get rid of the shine from rubbing on Dunkin Donuts booth seats. No clue how that translates to 2023 Federal Reserve toilet paper.

Are you in a state with magazine restrictions? What’s driving the 45 requirement? You’re going to box yourself into traditionally more expensive firearms without much in terms of practical advantage over 9mm.

The best nightstand gun in a state with magazine restrictions/gun bans is going to be a shorter barrel shotgun. It’s going to be incredibly difficult to find a better option than a Mossberg 500/590 (or frankly even a Maverick 88 if you’re on a tight budget).

Why the $700 cap? The rail is for a light, yeah? $150. Planning on ruination red dot? You’re going to run $200 worth of jhp through it and 1000+ fmj just to start, right? [Princess Amedala “RIGHT?!” meme]

Just find the gun you want and spend the money it costs to get it. The FNX-45 and new 545 are worth looking at.

    Plenty of options.

If you have above average size hands the Glock 21 is a great choice (will have to get 10 round limited mags though). Also the M&P45 M2.0 does have models with a rail so that’s an option as well. HK45 is a decent choice too if you’re looking for hammer fired.

Gun Buyer has a S&W M&P 2.0 with thumb safety and rail for under 700 now. Check there. Cause I have no idea of alternatives

If those were my criteria, I’d probably get a tactical 1911 from RIA like [this one](https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/182369) and get a +2 mag or extender.

Glock 30. 10 rounds, under $700, has a rail, so much under $700 you will have money left for a TLR 1 HP light and what’s not to love. Basic, reliable. Ticks all the boxes.

Ok Ill bite why not a G21 because it meets all your requirements. Fact is there are a fair bit of guns that meet the requirement.

Why not another XD? They make plenty of Xds in 45.

Or you can go all out and get a USP, would probably have to go used to get it under 700 now though. Put a heavier spring in it and load that puppy up with 45 supers to really ruin someone’s day. Recoil may be a problem but if you can get good with it and keep it on target it would be a potent package.

Was your first gun purchase a .45? Not sure who steered you in that direction but I’d steer away from it for a slew of reasons. Follow up shots are slower, sight acquisition after a shot is slower because of added recoil. They blind you much worse than a 9mm at night, bigger, bulkier, much less capacity (I know it doesn’t matter now, but the mag capacity will soon fall, I’m in NJ so I feel your pain). 45s offer no advantage in my opinion. Bigger isn’t always better. 45s are for fudds.
M&Ps are great guns, I have several in 9mm. Sig P320s are also excellent night stand guns and can be found within your price range.
