So I’m 21 and I live in Alabama and want to get a hand gun and want to know what I need to know before I go to purchase it. What’s the best way to get a gun (pawn shop?) also do I need to get any forms? I already have a permit for concealed carry and don’t know if I need one for open? Any help would be appreciated I can’t seem to find any reliable stuff on the internet.

I would highly recommend taking a class from a reputable instructor. Even if you know what you’re doing you can learn a lot.

Also, open carry is kinda dumb unless you’re in the woods.

Join r/CCW it is a great resource

You will have to fill out basic forms etc. Be prepared to kill some time.

One thing I wish I knew when I got my first pistol was the fact that what is “best” for you is going to change. This is why people end up buying way more than one lol. Just put some thoughts into what you wear and how comfortable you will be concealing whatever size you go with. My first pistol ended up being too big to conceal in the summer, so I got a second.

If you buy an economy pistol from Ruger or Taurus, don’t sell it in 2 years when you buy a Glock. You will regret that decision

Have you tried any out? My first step was to read reviews then try the ones with the best reviews. I had a friend who could shoot on his own property and he also owned a couple of the ones I was interested in. I rented some others at an LGS that also had a shooting range.

I was mainly interested in concealed carry, specifically pocket carry, so that narrowed my choices a great deal.

The first one was at my LGS. I still have it. So was my second. Most of the others have been on line and sent to a local FFL. I’ve only bought used once (from that friend) and never used from anyplace else, especially from a pawnshop, only because I don’t know how well the previous owner cared for it.

I’ve had to send back several to the manufacturer for servicing, and in every case they fixed the issue without charging me or arguing with me. Excellent customer service. Those were: Springfield Armory, Smith & Wesson and Taurus! I also have several Rugers and have heard they have great customer service as well, but have never used it.
I only wish auto manufacturers and dealers observed the same commitment to service!
