Rod size for the Driftless?

What size rod do you generally prefer for fishing the small streams of the Driftless?
I have a 9f 5wt now but I’m awfully tempted to get a 8f4w or a 7’6f3w for the trip I’m planning.
The St. Croix Rio Santo in 8f4w that’s on sale right now is kindof speaking to me. I mainly fish smaller streams and don’t have a back up.
