I read somewhere that the issue combat boots were so horrible (or wore out so fast) that it was very common to see Russian soldiers with athletic shoes on instead.
I’m not 100% sure about the validity of that reason but there are a ton of videos and pics of Russians with running shoes. And those spaceballs helmets.
