Short Barrel Bolt Gun with Heavy Barrel
-
Im looking into my next bolt gun for the range. Currently I have a Tikka Tac A1 which is of course spectacular, but its in 6.5CM and 24″ so the ammo is expensive and heavy at about 15lbs.
I was looking for a shorter barrel(18″ or 20″) in .308.
Some such rifles I’m looking at are the Remington 700 SPS and the Remington 700 XCR compact. Even though I heard of the declining quality of Remingtons I did have a 5R which I was very pleased with.Another option is Bergara. The HMR has the bigger stock with the detachable magazine which is more than I’m looking for. I prefer the standard stocks (4 shot capacity) like the ridge. Is the Ridge barrel heavy enough for range shooting?
I’ll only be shooting 100-200yrds but running alot of rounds each session.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amHave you ever considered a trainer rifle? It definitely costs a lot less to run and will help you with reading the wind.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amJust gonna leave this here. Kinda what sold me on mine. I’m not a big guy, and didn’t really want a bolt gun solely for bench rest shooting, or to lug around a long barrel only for brush or stand-hunting.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amRealize that the Remington 700 is currently out of production. The Remington firearms factory is back up and running, but I wouldn’t expect to see any 700s on shelves until fall or so, and even then it will likely be hunting models almost exclusively.
Hunting weight barrels will heat up faster than a heavier barrel and can lead to stringing and/or groups opening up.
Honestly, unless you’re dead set on centerfire, I think your situation (range rifle, lots of shooting, max 200y) is one just screaming for a 22LR trainer.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amI have a Remington 700 SPS. I find it to be more than enough for my needs (target shooting & groundhog hunting). Easily less than half MOA with the right load.

My groups open up a lot when the barrel starts getting warm though. Not huge, but not sub-MOA anymore. Around 50 rounds in 2 hours is my personal limit for acceptable accuracy. A load that shoots 1/2″ groups (@100 yards) from a cold barrel might be shooting 1-1/2″ groups from a very warm (not what I would call “hot”) barrel, for example. [**EDIT** – they never seem to get larger than that though.] That may still be ‘acceptable accuracy’ for you though.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amSo I had a Remington 700 AAC-SD .308 20″ – I hated it, I got a total lemon, but that’s besides the point – but they also made an AAC-SD 16″ and it was apparently more popular than the 20″.
I myself didn’t see the point of such a short barrel bolt-action ‘sniper rifle’ type of gun but some others did, apparently.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amAny experience with the Savage 10p-SR? They offer one with an 18″ barrel in .308.
Only thing I find a little alarming is how low the price is.

GuestJune 14, 2021 at 8:37 amHow about a Howa 1500 20″ barrel in an HS Precision stock?
The barrel is available on Brownells.
