I noticed Shakespeare does their Ugly Stik in a kayak version. Do you guys bother with special rods only for kayaking? If so, what do you look for?

My husband likes the St. Croix kayak rod line. The butts are a couple inches shorter, which can be helpful if your pfd gets in the way. That said, while he loves them – they’re an overall upgrade from his previous rods – he hasn’t found the shorter butts “necessary”.

I just use my regular rods, all 6’6″ or 7′ long

We have ugly stick Tackleratz Kids which is a kids rod that is built tough and short. Good for the kayak as it is easy to use with limited space.

I’ve got a St. Croix Mojo Yak Casting 7’ MH-F paired with a Shimano SLX DC as my all-around-ish setup on my kayak. The shorter butt section makes a HUGE difference, and I ALWAYS wear my PFD.

I keep a Kastking Crixus combo as a backup, as well as a spinning combo and an 8’ surf rod that I troll with between the shallows.

I just use a bait caster for the convenience while in the kayak. For me, it’s a lot easier and more efficient than a spinning reel. Nothing special though

I fish for bass and have never felt the need for any dedicated kayak setups.

Though if you cannot stand while fishing, shorter rod could be beneficial.

I prefer rods with shorter butts for yak fishing, but none of them are specifically kayak rods.

Figure out what handle length works best for you and try to stick to that when you buy new rods. I’ve tried rods that are too short for comfortable fishing (St. Croix Bass X MH 7′ spinning) and too long and constantly hits my PFD (Ugly Stik MH 7′ spinning). You don’t need a special length made for kayaks, you just have to find what length feels right for you.
