Surprised and Feeling Naive / PA Firearms Question

Very surprised at what I’m finding today.
I am a PA resident who wishes to purchase a firearm for home protection and also get my conceal and carry permit. I have past experience with firearms but do not currently own one. I have no past arrest record, am employed, involved in the local community, have plenty of character references and would not have anything that would result in a problem with a background check. After looking into the process to apply for a conceal and carry, it looks like me having a state issued medical marijuana card would prohibit me from not only obtaining a conceal carry permit but it would also make it a federal offense for me to even just own a firearm altogether!
I’m surprised to say the least and wondering if anyone has any insight into this topic?
