The casing is only slightly longer, I get that means more powder which means higher velocity, but why is it so much more powerful? I saw a video of .38 special bullets and .357 magnum bullets were shot out of the same gun and they were the same grain at sheet metal, and the .357 magnum penetrated almost double (I think it was 5-6 sheets penetration for the .38 and 11 for the .357). Why does that little bit of powder effect the power so much?

It’s the charge. .357 runs at much higher pressure vs .38 spc.

38spc uses 3.1 to 10 grains of powder, depending on the formula of the powder.

357mag uses 8.9 to 20.3 grains of powder, depending on the formula of the powder.

    Powder, pressure, velocity.

The increased pressure of a .357 cartridge propels the bullet at a much faster velocity compared to a .38 special. Kinetic energy is calculated by Kinetic energy = 1/2*mv² where m is the mass of the projectile and v is the velocity. The energy of the projectile increases exponentially when the velocity increases. If you were to double the velocity of the projectile, the energy would increase by a factor of 4 if the mass is the same.
