I watched his recent video and he expressed his hatred for the round and said it sucks.

He also got a good bit of the facts/history on it wrong.

Why doesn’t he like the round?

I’ve never shot one, and don’t plan on it unless someone offers me one. I suspect Brandon hates it for the reason that a lot of people (myself included) dislike giant calibers.

    1. Recoil: Yes sure you’re a big strong tough guy with big pendulous balls. But, even still, less recoil means faster follow up shots. I’d rather shoot three times with 5.56 than once with 50 Beowulf.
    2. Capacity. 30 rounds of 5.56 is better than 7 of some giant ass caliber. For a decent shot, for each 50 Beo you fire, you could have fired 4 5.56. That’s a great hit probability multiplier.
    3. Lack of reason for the size: as I understand it, giant calibers (458 SOCOM) became popular in certain military circles because 5.56 lacked stopping power. *But*, the military is limited to non-expanding ammunition (by the Hague convention), you’re not. I question the idea that the lethal hit box with 458 socom or 50 Beowulf is much bigger than that of 5.56 with a heavy, expanding round.
    4. Lack of range: the range of these heavy calibers is terrible. They have awful B.C.s, and are slow. The one place that 5.56 can genuinely be improved on is range (hence DMR rifles in 308/6.5 creedmoor, or ARs in high B.C. calibers like 6.5 Grendel). Beowulf and 458 socom are even worse than 5.56.
    5. Cost: ammo is expensive as *fuck.* Better to train with a “inferior” caliber more.

Another point, not really a downside but a point of comparison: why not just buy a semi-auto shotgun? You’re getting very similar ballistics, shotgun has slightly less reliable box magazines, but that doesn’t seem worth the 3x more expensive ammo.

If you want a ridiculous fun gun, more power to you. But I don’t find the idea practical.

    I love 50 Beo.

Slow like a bus, hits like a bus.
